Dillon Rudge

Dillon obtained a B.A.Hons Degree in Ceramics at Bristol Polytechnic of Art & Design in 1992. He follows his father, Lawson, elder brother and sister in producing Raku fired ceramic pieces. Almost all Dillon’s pieces are animals, and he tells us:

'Having lived in the countryside all my life, I have always been made aware of various animals both domestic and wild. By having explored all the different mediums in Art I found clay modelling the most satisfying and rewarding of all and therefore decided that combining clay with animal form was definitely the direction I was going.'

'Some animals have more characteristics than others, which at some stage in my Art Education made me realise that just copying an animal from life was not enough to capture an animal. I realised in most cases that realism is good to a certain degree but if nothing personal is attributed towards the piece then people might just as well buy the animal for real. The same being true of painting and drawing.

So, at present, I am trying to capture different aspects of the animal - for instance my latest piece is of a Burmilla Cat in a semi crouched position, which upon first sight might appear relatively calm and poised as if it had just caught its first glimpse of prey; but from the other side the muscles and legs are cocked ready for the last burst of energy before the final pounce.

I hope this information about my work sheds some light as to what I am about and what motivates my perception of Art in general.'
